Getting Started in Mortal Shell II

A calm first-hour plan for the beta and the August 20 launch.

Mortal Shell II Getting Started

Mortal Shell II drops you into a ravaged world as the Harbinger, a being meant to reclaim the Undermether’s stolen Ova. Unlike many soulslikes, the sequel removes the stamina bar so movement and attacks are no longer rationed by a green meter. That freedom is exciting—and it is also how new players die. This Getting Started page gives you a stable order of operations for the Open Beta and for launch week on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.

Mindset before you swing

Treat early deaths as map tuition. The world is marketed as compact but interconnected, with winding footpaths and over sixty dungeons marketed for the full release. You do not need to clear every side path on your first pass. Clear a beacon or landmark, note a Shell corpse for later, and keep one upgrade path active instead of spreading materials thin. If you came from the first Mortal Shell, unlearn stamina budgeting and relearn Harden timing; the combat guide is mandatory reading after this page.

First session checklist

  1. Finish the prologue cleanly and learn Harden as a panic stone, not a panic mash.
  2. Confirm your bindings on the controls guide so parry and Harden are never on awkward keys.
  3. When the open region unlocks, prioritize survivability tools and a reliable melee string before sidearm experiments.
  4. Track Shell discoveries with the Shell checklist so you do not forget a corpse you walked past.
  5. If you are still in the free slice, follow the Open Beta guide and beta rewards for carry-forward rules.

Combat habits that save runs

Without stamina, aggression is a choice, not a resource spend. Tap Harden when a string is about to land, break enemy posture with mixed tactics, then convert the stagger into a critical. Seal parries are high risk: watch for unparryable tells and spend Resolve on empowered ripostes when you need healing pressure. Sidearms consume Resolve too, so do not empty the meter on ranged poke right before a boss phase. Practice these habits on trash packs before Magdalena-scale fights; the boss guide assumes you already know the loop.

Exploration and Shells

Shells are found in the world, not unlocked from a menu. Confirmed names so far include Harros the Vassal, Tiel the Acolyte, Eredrim the Venerable, and Proxima the Broodseeker, with eight playable Shells promised at full release. Do not trust unverified eight-name lists. Read the Shell roster, then use how to find Shells for route thinking. Early rankings live on the Shell tier list with heavy caveats.

Buying and hardware before day one

Confirm edition differences on the release date page and editions overview. Devout Edition Advanced Access begins August 17; standard launch is August 20. Check the system requirements—minimum specs ask for a strong CPU, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 2060 SUPER-class GPU, and a 70 GB SSD. Use the pre-launch checklist the night before you play.

Where do I check the release date?

August 20, 2026 worldwide, with Devout Advanced Access on August 17—details on the Updates pages.
