Mortal Shell II Map, Beacons, and Fast Travel
Navigate the interconnected world without losing track of which Shell you still owe a visit.
Mortal Shell II’s world is marketed as compact and interconnected, not open-world bloat. The map is locked for the first hour or so while the prologue walkthrough plays out. Once you reach Marrow Keep, the Siphon vendor and a network of beacons light up the rest of the continent. This page explains how to unlock the map, what beacons do, and the regional etiquette that keeps the loop from turning into busywork.
When the map actually unlocks
You will not see a world map the moment you leave the grotto. The first open region opens in sequence: prologue → first dungeon approach → Marrow Keep. When you sit at the Siphon prompt for the first time, the map vendor unlocks, and the Keep fast-travel option appears. Until then, treat the locked map as encouragement to learn the immediate space, not as a soft-lock. Confirm progress in the beta progress tracker if you are still in the free slice.
Beacons versus bonfires
Beacons are the Mortal Shell II equivalent of bonfires or Sites of Grace. Cleanse a beacon to clear surrounding corruption, rest, manage gear, and unlock fast travel from the Keep. Each beacon also serves as a soft checkpoint: enemies re-spawn outside the radius, mini-bosses do not. Pair beacon-runs with the Shell checklist so a possessed body across the river becomes a single short trip rather than a half-hour hike.
How to read the world map
The in-game map is layered:
- Topography with fog that lifts as you cleanse beacons
- Region names matching the official zones (groves, marshlands, bone citadels, the underground)
- Icon overlays for Shells, dungeons, NPCs, vendors, lore objects, and large dungeons
- Pin notes you can drop with a button press to mark a corpse or a side dungeon you want to revisit
Do not trust the map for layout in 3D vertical spaces—the Keep and the bone tower districts are stacked. Always re-orient by a beacon before a backtrack.
Fast-travel rules
- You can only fast travel between cleansed beacons and the Keep
- Some beacons sit behind mini-bosses; clear the gate first
- Combat in progress cancels the travel prompt, by design
- Carrying heavy Shell corpses may slow your return trip on foot; stash heavy items at a beacon before exploring deeper
Region etiquette and pacing
Each region has a soft difficulty curve that the developers tuned. Do not fight your way through a region in alphabetical order. Pick one of three habits:
- Linear cleanse — visit every beacon, then choose one to deep-clear.
- Pin-and-pivot — mark a Shell corpse or dungeon, return later with better gear.
- Loop and leave — clear a region, fast-travel back to the Keep, upgrade, then move on.
The How to find Shells guide assumes pin-and-pivot. The boss guide assumes linear cleanse followed by a quick return to the Keep for upgrades.
Shells on the map
Only confirmed Shells are placed on the map at launch. TBA Shells may appear in later patches and this wiki will not pre-populate their coordinates—see the Shell roster and the Shell checklist for a conservative list. Treat any ‘8-Shell map’ image you see on social media as a leak and not a guide.
Dungeons and the over-60 promise
Cold Symmetry markets more than sixty dungeons in the full game. Most are short, hand-crafted spaces that fold back into the open world, not separate kingdoms. Plan two dungeon runs per beacon trip: one for Shell hunting, one for Tarstones or weapon upgrades. Avoid the temptation to clear every dungeon before the first boss; the combat guide explains why over-clearing burns upgrade material faster than it pays back.
How the world changes after launch
Day-one patches tend to add map markers for new NPCs, vendors, or shortcuts. Re-check the Updates hub after the first patch. The Shell checklist is the easiest way to keep your map correspondence and the wiki honest at the same time.
What the map will not do for you
It will not mark which side path hides a Magdalena-style hidden boss, which vendor sells a particular Seal, or which TBA Shell drops which Tarstone. Use the Shell roster and the builds and loadouts for those questions. The map is a navigation tool, not a spoiler.
When you are truly lost
If the map refuses to reveal a new region after what feels like real progress, double-check that you have actually cleansed a beacon rather than merely walked past one. Some beacons are hidden under corpses and need a melee strike to reveal. The prologue walkthrough explains the input. If all else fails, the links hub and the official site mortalshell.com often have updated screenshots after each patch.
Map tips that travel between regions
- Mark every Tiel-style Shell corpse the moment you spot it, even if you are under-levelled
- Drop a pin near any door you cannot open yet; the key usually lives in a clearly marked dungeon
- Keep a written line per region: ‘A: 3 beacons, 1 mini-boss; B: 2 beacons, hidden cellar’ — that level of note keeps launch week calm
- If you find a fork in the road with no marker, take the path that loops back to a beacon, not the one that goes deeper
After the map is yours
Re-read the Shell checklist and the beta progress tracker to triage what is left. Then plan a route through the remaining regions using the combat guide and the builds page. The map stops being a mystery the moment you stop using it as a checklist and start using it as a planner.
Bridge out
Cartography in Mortal Shell II rewards patience. Stay on beacon rhythm, do not chase every dungeon on the first pass, and let the Shell checklist decide which route earns the next upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week and the open beta.
How do I unlock the map?
Reach Marrow Keep and use the Siphon prompt for the first time. The map vendor appears shortly after.
Can I fast-travel from any beacon?
Only from cleansed beacons and from Marrow Keep. Combat cancels the travel prompt by design.
Why are some areas still fogged?
You have not visited the beacon in that region yet. Walk there on foot once and the fog lifts.
Are the dungeon counts accurate?
Marketing promises over sixty dungeons. The exact count varies by region and patch; treat it as a planning tool, not a trophy list.
